Bette Davis singing a tune from Rocky Horror? Yes!
Akron-The Highland Theatre offers a
rare opportunity to see Bette Davis singing "The Time Warp" from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, barking out the lyrics with great enthusiasm, waving her cigarette around frantically.
And nowhere else are you likely to encounter Nana Mouskouri,
in thigh-high leather boots (and those famous glasses) singing "These Boots Were Made For Walking.” Both moments come from the very funny and very talented Toronto drag queen Chris Peterson.
Peterson's bangon impressions are among the highlights of We're Funny That Way, premièring at the Highland Theatre for
Karen Williams
an exclusive two-week run that began Friday, June 4.
Directed by Canadian filmmaker David Adkin, this 86-minute documentary was filmed at the 1997 Toronto Gay and Lesbian Comedy Festival and includes the comedic talents of well-known gay comedians Scott Capurro, Maggie Cassella, Kate Clinton, Jaffe Cohen, Elvira Kurt, Lea DeLaria, John McGivern, Steve Moore, Christopher Peterson, Bob Smith and Clevelander Karen Williams.
We see them in performance playing their mostly smart, sharp material and drawing big laughs from the hordes of fans who attended the festival. We hear them in interviews, reflecting on their lives, their attraction to comedy, their decision to be openly gay in their acts, ant the effect that openness has had on their careers and their audiences.
"We're Funny That Way is not just geared toward the gay community," said Patti Eddy, owner and operator of the Highland Theatre.
Bob Smith
Lea DeLaria
"This film can be enjoyed by comedy fans from all walks of life. It's funny and very poignant at the same
time. These comedians are baring their
souls and you
can't help but
fall in love with them."
Admission is $6.50 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. From each ticket purchased, $1 will benefit Akron's new Pride Center, operated by the Akron Area Pride Collective.
